The Basics of Welding: Different Techniques Explained

Welding involves more than merely bonding multiple pieces of metal together to form a unique metal structure. It requires you to understand different welding techniques to perform the job correctly.

The welding techniques depend on the type of metal structure to be welded and the material you will use to weld it. In addition, the experience level of the welder may play a role in choosing a suitable technique as well.

Here are the top three ways to weld metal:

1) Stick Welding

Shielded metal arc welding (stick welding) features a flux-coated metal filler stick rod. The welder must melt the rod to generate a gas to prevent contaminants from entering the welded area as it is being welded. Two hands are required when using the rod.

 

2) TIG Welding

Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding features a tungsten metal rod to do the welding. It is like the stick welding technique, except you use one hand to hold the filter rod and another for the welding gun. The filter rod melts together with two metal puddles.

 

3) MIG Welding

Metal inert gas (MIG) welding features a welding gun containing an electrode. The welder uses the electric arc on the electrode to melt metal pieces together. After that, gas diffuses and spreads to block airborne contaminants from the welding area. It is similar to how stick welding does that after generating gas.
