The Main Types of Welding Processes

Arc Welding

Arc welding is a form of welding where electricity is utilized to melt and fuse metal pieces. The process consists of a metal stick with an electric arc or electrode to transmit the electricity to the base metal material. You’ve probably seen people use this electrode device before because it’s a metal stick with a bright white light at the end of it.

Metal-Inert Gas (MIG) Welding

Metal-inert gas welding requires using a welding gun with a long solid wire electrode to heat the base metal materials. The gun also comes equipped with shielding gas to prevent airborne contamination. Most welding projects will use MIG welding.

Novices typically attempt to use MIG welding because you can purchase MIG welding guns over the counter. However, we still recommend you hire a professional welder to ensure a good outcome.

Tungsten-Inert Gas (TIG) Welding

Tungsten-inert gas welding is one of the more complicated welding types because it is longer and more challenging to perform. It consists of an inert gas and a non-consumable tungsten rod to create the electric arc for heating the metal.

You can expect a better quality welding outcome from TIG welding. However, only a professional welder should perform TIG welding because it requires advanced skills and training.
